Seniors make up 63 percent of COVID hospitalizations
CDC statistics show adults hospitalized with COVID in 2023 had not gotten the bivalent vaccine. These adults made up 75% of the cases. Seniors who are 65 and older subsequently made nearly 63 percent of U.S. hospitalizations for covid-19. The hospitalization rate increased with age (see the chart below). Hospitalizations for COVID increased in first eight months of 2023. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collects all hospitalization data.
The CDC found that people in that age group 65 or older represented more than half of the admissions to intensive care units in that period. Another key point, Seniors made up 63 percent of COVID hospitalizations 2023. Additionally, nearly 90 percent of deaths among age group 65 or older were those hospitalized because of COVID. The hospitalization number reflects an increase from preceding months (March 2020 through December 2022). Finally, about 46 percent of those hospitalized because of COVID were 65 or older.
The report found that most older people hospitalized from January through August this year had at least one underlying health condition. Most patients had two or more health conditions. Most common health conditions were diabetes, kidney disorders, coronary artery disease, heart failure and obesity. The report noted that more than 75 percent of older adults hospitalized with COVID this year. They had not gotten the bivalent vaccine. This vaccine protects against the original coronavirus as well as subsequent variants. The bivalent vaccine recommended for everyone 5 and older.
