January 2024 Summary for SARS-CoV-2

This post is a quick January 2024 summary for SARS-CoV-2 in the United States from CDC weekly data.   However, the CDC data thus far only covers to January 20th.  Thus, we will only be posting the trends in January.

The following trends are noted:

  • Positive last Week January 20th    10.8 % down  1.2% from previous week of 12.5%
  • Emergence room admissions          down 16.3%  – A good sign!
  • Hospital admissions                         26,607  Trend down -14% – A good sign!
  • Deaths                                               Down  7.5% – A good sign!

Current active variants are JN.1 As the new year takes off, CDC continues to track the rise of JN.1 across the country. An offspring of BA.2.86, JN.1 is now the most widely circulating variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the United States and globally. At this time, there is no evidence that JN.1 causes more severe disease.

Vaccine effectiveness evaluation

mRNA vaccination was 76% effective in preventing COVID-19–associated invasive mechanical ventilation and death up to 6 months after the last dose and remained 56% effective at 1–2 years.

The take away

January 2024 Summary for SARS-CoV-2, the data presented here is not complete yet.  We will update this post once we get the full January 2024 data.  Meanwhile, we can see the trends are down so far in January.   We see more people wearing masks in public places.  People are still keeping good social distance.  Thus more people are taking personal responsibility.

What CDC is doing about SARS-CoV-2 Variant JN.1

Furthermore the CDC will continue to track JN.1 and other variants, working closely with partners around the world, to provide the latest information.  Moreover, it’s a great time to get an updated COVID-19 vaccine.
